Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship 2023-2024 for academic year 2023 are open to applications from international students starting August 1st 2022. The deadline for submitting your Swiss Excellence Scholarship application is December 1st, 2022. This is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of the opportunity to attend school for free in Switzerland.

Each year , the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to encourage international exchange and cooperation in research between Switzerland and more than 180 other nations. The recipients are chosen by the body that awards them that is which is the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS ).

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2023 are aimed at students from overseas with an advanced degree or Ph.D. as well as foreign artists who have bachelor’s degrees.

Different types of Swiss Excellence Scholarship

    • Arts scholarships are available to art students who want to pursue a master’s level degree within Switzerland.
      Art scholarships are granted for studies in the Swiss institution of higher learning or conservatory. The Swiss award is offered to students from a restricted number of countries.
    • Research scholarships are available to anyone. award of a research fellowship is open to postgraduate researchers from any field (who possess a master’s level degree at a minimum) who intend to move to Switzerland to conduct research or pursue further studies in the doctoral or postdoctoral stage. Research scholarships are granted to study or research in all Swiss cantonal and cantonal-based universities, universities of applied sciences and both federal institutions of technology. Only applicants nominated by an academic tutor from one of these higher-education institutions are evaluated.

Swiss Federal Scholarship Selection Criteria

The FCS examines scholarship applications on the basis of three factors:

A) Profile of the candidate
B) The quality of the project of research or artistic work
C) Potential synergies and opportunities for future research collaboration

Eligibility Criteria to be a Winner of Swiss Excellence Scholarship

  1. Candidates who had been staying in Switzerland longer than a year prior to the time of the award at the beginning of September, aren’t qualified.
  2. The applicant must submit a letter of an academic faculty member (including the short CV of the professor) at the selected Swiss university, stating why she/he will oversee and assist in the research. Without this support the application will be denied.
  3. Candidates must submit an idea of research that includes an estimated timeframe. This is the main point for the submission.
  4. The applicant has to pay the full attention required to the task at hand.
  5. Candidates must have a good command of the proficiency in the language required for study or research.
  6. Anyone who has already received from the Swiss Federal Excellence Scholarship are not eligible to apply for another award.
  7. The recipients of scholarships are expected to relocate to Switzerland during the time of their grant.

The list of documents required to apply in the Swiss Excellence Scholarship Swiss Excellence Scholarship

  1. Signature FCS request Formula (typed and then printed) with photographs.
  2. A complete CV, including the list of publications from academic institutions and prizes and other awards.
  3. motivational note (max. two pages).
  4. A complete research proposal (max. 5 pages that is completed) by using only using the FCS Research proposal template.
  5. Copy of the letter from the Academic host faculty member (including the short resume) at the selected Swiss university, stating why she/he will supervise and help with research.
  6. A brief CV for the professor from the institution where they are based.
  7. Two personal letter of recommendations from two professors from the field of study that are relevant to the applicant (use only this FCS reference form. Keep originals sealed envelopes are only required for the first set). Two sets of letters of recommendation are not required.
  8. Photocopies of certificates and grade sheets from previously attended universities/colleges and diplomas with grades, starting with the most recent. If they are not translated into English, French, Italian or German with certified translations attested in English. Don’t present the original certificates.
  9. Medical certificate signed by the doctor (use just it on the FCS medical certificate forms).
  10. A second copy of the passport applicant (main page that contains personal information). Dual nationals must add duplicates of their passports. Candidates already living in Switzerland in the course of applying include a copy of their residence permit to Switzerland.

Swiss Government Scholarship Scholarship Award:

These scholarships include: Ph.D. Scholarships

  • The scholarship amount to one monthly installment of CHF 1’920.
  • Non-EFTA grantees and those who are not EU only: compulsory Swiss medical insurance provided via the FCS.
  • There aren’t any family allowances.
  • Students who are from outside the continent of Europe get a travel allowance (lump amount) to return to their home country (provided at the conclusion period of scholarship).
  • A special CHF 30 housing allowance (paid one time at the beginning of the award).
  • One-year half-fare on public transportation.
  • Support services, as well as various excursions including dinners, sightseeing tours and excursions scheduled by the Swiss Govt. Excellence Scholarship holders.
  • PhD recipients of scholarships may request an additional allowance for fieldwork. For field trips lasting more than two months, the amount of the scholarship is reduced to 50%..

Postdoctoral scholarships:

  • The scholarship amount to the monthly amount of CHF 3’500.
  • For grantees who are non-EU or non-EFTA only: compulsory Swiss healthcare insurance must be provided via the FCS.
  • There aren’t any family allowances.
  • Scholarship recipients from countries outside continent Europe get a travel allowance (lump amount) for a return flight to their home country (provided at the conclusion period of scholarship).
  • A special CHF $300 housing allowance (paid only once at the start of the award).
  • One-year half-fare on public transportation.
  • Support services and trips such as dinners and sightseeing tours organized to Swiss government Excellence Scholarship holders.

Research scholarships

  • The scholarship amount to one monthly payment of CHF 1,920.
  • Non-EFTA grantees and those who are not EU only: compulsory Swiss healthcare insurance must be provided through the FCS.
  • There aren’t any family allowances.
  • Scholarship recipients who come from countries outside continent Europe are granted a flight allowance (lump amount) for a return flight to their home country (provided at the conclusion time of their scholarship).
  • Particular CHF $300 housing allowance (paid one time at the beginning of the award).
  • Half-fare for public transportation one year.
  • Support services, as well as various excursions including dinners, sightseeing tours and excursions organized by the Swiss government Excellence Scholarship holders.

Fine Arts

Nationality: International Students

It is possible to take a scholarship in Switzerland

Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries International applicants are eligible to apply.
  • Entrance Requirements: PhD Criteria
    • Masters degree, or equivalent university degree recognized from Swiss university. Swiss university. The applicant should have earned this qualification prior to the beginning of the scholarship in September next year. To prove this, the degree must be presented by the Federal Commission for Scholarships before the beginning of the grant.
    • Date of birth for the applicant on or at the time of birth, i.e. after 31 December 1983.
    • Candidates who had been living in Switzerland longer than one year prior to the time of the award at the beginning of September, aren’t admissible.
    • The applicant must submit a letter by an academic professor (including his or her CV) at the selected Swiss university, stating why she/he will supervise and assist with your PhD thesis. If this is not provided the application is rejected.
    • The applicants must submit the research proposal, which includes the timeframe. This is the main part in the submission. The applicant has to pay all attention required to this.
    • Candidates must have a good command of the knowledge of the language needed for PhD studies or research.
    • Anyone who has already benefited from an Swiss Federal Excellence Scholarship are not eligible to apply for a new the scholarship.
    • The recipients of scholarships are expected to relocate to Switzerland during the grant period.

    Postdoctoral Criteria

    • PhD degree
    • Five years could be between the award to the Ph.D. and the application due date.
    • Candidates who have been located in Switzerland over a period of more than one calendar year at the time of the award beginning in the month of September, aren’t qualified.
    • Candidates must provide a written confirmation (or an email) from an instructor from the Swiss host institution that confirms that they are willing and able to supervise postdoctoral research. If this is not confirmed the application will be denied.
    • Candidates must submit an idea for research that includes the period of time (this is the main point in the submission. The applicant must pay the needed attention to the proposal).
    • The applicants must be proficient of the knowledge of the language needed for postdoctoral research.
    • Anyone who has already received from the Swiss government Excellence Scholarship are not eligible to apply for another award.

    Research Criteria

    • A Master’s or similar university degree recognized as equivalent by The Swiss university. The applicant must have completed this degree prior to the commencement of the scholarship in September next year. To prove this, the degree must be presented at the Federal Commission for Scholarships before the date of commencement of the award.
    • The applicant must be born on or after 31 December 1983.
    • Candidates who had been staying in Switzerland over a year prior to the start of the scholarship beginning in the month of September will not be qualified.
    • The applicant must submit a letter from a professor of the Swiss host institution, stating that they are willing to assist and supervise the research. Without this endorsement the application will be denied.
    • The applicants must submit the research proposal, which includes the time frame. This is the main part in the submission. The applicant has to pay all attention required to this.
    • Candidates must have a good control of the proficiency in the language required for study or research.
    • Anyone who has already benefited from an Swiss Federal Excellence Scholarship are not eligible to apply for another award. The recipients of the scholarship are expected to relocate to Switzerland during the time of their grant.

    Fine Arts Criteria

    • A bachelor’s or higher degree.
    • Candidates must be born before the 31st of December, 1983.
    • Candidates should apply for the scholarship at least three years after they have earned their Bachelor’s degree.
    • The applicants who were living in Switzerland longer than a year prior to the start of the scholarship at the beginning of September, aren’t qualified.
    • The applicants must be proficient of the required proficiency in the language required to be able to successfully complete the Master’s program.
    • Candidates who have already received from the Swiss Federal Excellence Scholarship are not eligible to apply for another the scholarship.
      Students who are awarded scholarships must relocate to Switzerland during the grant period.
  • English requirement for language: Students who are not from the country of their origin are often required to satisfy specific English requirements for language/other languages to be able to pursue studies in the country.

How to Apply:

The application form can be obtained via email from the Swiss Embassy. Send 3 sets (=1 original plus 2 copies) of the application documents in the exactly the order listed below The first set includes the original documents signed by the applicant as well as those confidential letters of recommendations as well as, in the event of translation, attested translations. The remaining two sets are copies of the first set, minus those with confidential recommendations (only 1st set).).

  • Two letters of recommendation that are confidential from two professors who are within the applicant’s field (use only this FCS reference form. Keep originals sealed envelopes only for the first set).
  • Photocopies of certificates and grade sheets from previously attended universities/colleges and diplomas with grades, starting with the most recent. If they are not available in English, French, Italian or German with certified translations attested by a certified translator.
  • A signed medical certificate (use solely it on the FCS medical certificate forms).
  • A second copy of the passport applicant (main page that contains personal information). Dual nationals must have duplicates of their passports.

Application Procedure

Applications are subject to preliminary selection by the relevant national authorities and/or the Swiss diplomatic representation. The short-listed applications are then assessed by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), which takes the final decision.

The FCS is composed of professors from all Swiss public universities. Scholarship awards are decided on the basis of academic and scientific excellence.
